MechWarrior: Tactical Command App Reviews

Outstanding foray into the BattleTech universe!

As a fan of BattleTech/Mechwarrior games since the 1980s "BattleTech:Crescent Hawks Inception" (a very good game) and the original 1990 "Mechwarrior" (one of my all time favorites), it has been a LONG time since anyone has done anything great with the BattleTech universe. That day has finally come. I played all the way through the game on an iPad 2. Yes, there are lagging issues that will teleport one of your mechs into an unplayable location that cause you to have to restart the mission. Yes, the game occasionally crashes. However, these do not detract from the fact that this is the best iOS game I have ever played. The game itself is brilliant. Heres why: STORY The story in Mechwarrior: Tactical Command doesnt quite reach the level of tear-jerking drama of "Crescent Hawks Inception", but it comes close. As you play you realize that even when you win a battle you are still losing the war, and you will do everything you can to preserve your home and way of life. MECH LAB Mechwarrior: Tactical Command wisely adapted the buy/sell/upgrade facilities from the "Mechwarrior" computer game series. Although it doesnt allow the unlimited freedom of jumping from star system to star system to trade mechs for money like the original Mechwarrior, it does allow you to substantially modify your mechs weapons load out to account for different tactics. On more than one occasion I found that I could only win a battle by reconfiguring my mechs. INTERFACE Ever since the iPad came out, I have wondered how someone would do a proper mech interface for the iPad. Mechwarrior games typically need a combination of twist-control joystick and lots of buttons to deal with multiple weapons combinations. Mechwarrior: Tactical Commands solution, a top-down interface, is very intuitive. My only gripe is that I wish I had the ability to see what was going on with a particular mech, a la the BattleTech games, but this would probably require a turn-based strategy game instead. Perhaps a pause menu? In any case, this isnt a huge deal as the fundamentals are great. In all this a GREAT game. To the developers, please consider making more missions, or even a random scenario generator like in the original Mechwarrior game. I would gladly pay $20 for this. The world doesnt need more "twitch"-style first person shooters. It needs Mechs. Big ones. With lots of autocannons and PPCs that can lose their left arm and blast back with the right. For now, I am basking in the glow of running a victorious mech lance through 21 missions. I cant wait for more.

Need more

Game was really good, very similar to the old PC version. Game did freeze on me a few times, but I was able to work thru it. Only issue I have is that it was not long enough. Got at third planet, and no updates. I would gladly pay a few more bucks to get a few planets added, maybe even be able to play other houses?

Great game

Great little war game. Follows the MechWarrior original game and is pretty much a recreation of the old MechCommander series for PC. Works just fine on iPhone, 0 bugs or crashes so far!

Waste of money

My son loaded this on his iTouch 4th gen (which it clearly stated was supported). Muddled through learning how to use it and was happily playing with friends when two days later he is suddenly unable to play with a message that states his device is "not supported". Seriously????? DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY unless you are someone who is constantly upgrading to the newest devices.

Bad game

Crashes constantly. Your mechs disappear and you cant use them. Very slow loading. Dont buy.

Shut up, non iPad users

Seriously. Oh, this game doesnt work on your Gen 2 iPod? So sorry, its 2013 now, grow the F up and buy a current device. This game is excellent. Been searching for years for a Battletech experience like this; havent found one since Mechwarrior 4. Granted, theres still plenty to improve, but its all upside: give us more levels, and more mech customization. Great job developer guys & gals, keep up the good work. Information is Ammunition, MF

Horrid

Do NOT waste your money...constant crashes, overpriced for graphics used...Mechs are tiny, later levels if you have four or so mechs after an enemy mech is destroyed you lose them and they are on the black part of the map. If I found a way I would seriously ask for my four dollars back...Should have known when others have said it was horrible and there is a warning when you open the app that it will probably crash...run whoever made this app out of business. IT IS A SCAM!!!

Crash

Id think that it was worth the price I paid IF the programming company fixed the near-constant crashing issue (which they acknowledge several times on the official website) and wrote/programmed new modules. I paid good money for 21 missions. If it hadnt been for crashing several times per mission, Id have run through the entire game in a couple hours. Success of games and their parent companies hinges on the fact that the game works as advertised.

Glitchy, crashes, and freezes

Grew up loving battletech and mech warrior. However, this is glitchy, freezes often, and guarantees to crash several times.

Buggy, clunky, aggravating.

First mission bugged out. Mechs disappeared. Not much depth.

Has potential, but needs improvement.

Ive played through the game 4 or 5 times now on different devices at different difficulty levels. The game will crash on nearly every mission, even with all settings turned to the minimum and no apps running in the background. Often the crash is at a critical point in the mission, and results in having to restart the mission or back up to a previous mission.

More please.

This could be a great game, but it does need some more depth. Don’t give up on the potential here.

Good attempt lacking on the follow through

This game has a cool concept and for a guy who has played a lot of mechwarrior the actual modification is not bad but, it needs polishing and more depth. Maybe skirmish, and secondary campaigns and in general once more, more depth try to bring it closer to the mech commander games.

Not Ready For Primetime

Enjoyed the Idea, but implementation fail. Two points for effort, zero for game play and zero for cost.

Joke

This game is a joke the low budget shows

Almost like a mechwarrior 4 RTS

Overall, a good game. Has its glitches, but between the mechlab and missions, its a must for any mechwarrior fan. I absolutely love playing this game. Would Definately but another one or more missions.

Buyer beware pretty darn awful

Im a pretty big fan of the battletech universe and MW in general but this looks nothing like screenshots its stretched out to fit iphone 5 and looks warped and almost unplayable not menus and overlay mind you but the actual gameplay. Also huge glitch on second level wherein you cant use the interface to control scout drone that you need to get past that level the button is cut off and wont let you select it. Pretty disappointed buyer beware and messing with video options in app doesnt fix it you cant fix the screen warp just make small improvements to graphics like shadows etc

Great! when its not crashing...

Fun game when it isnt crashing... Which is about every 10 minutes... Ive had the game for about a year. No updates or bug fixes. Takes up way too much space. 5 stars for concept and intent. 0 stars for execution and development. Save your money.

Save your money

Stopped playing because of the constant crashes. Hasnt had an update in ages, support page mentions iOS6 as a recent release. I love BattleTech but regret purchasing this game.

Broken! Needs fixed badly

Game needs updated horribly. Almost unplayable. Done spend your money on this till it gets fixed
