A little background: Ive been playing Battletech tabletop, all the computer games, and lived and breathed all the fiction and sourcebooks since I was introduced to the game in the 80s.
Short answer: For an iOS game, Im very satisfied with the experience, and would have happily paid $20 for this app, so for $3.99 Im quite blown away for the value of the game. Spend the money, buy this app, and enjoy losing a couple days to beat the campaign. If youre still not convinced, read on.
1) Gameplay: if you liked the Mechcommander games, youll be pleased. For a touch screen interface, Im not sure I could have expected more. There are plenty of options regarding group tactics and individual actions like Death From Above, Alpha Strike, and Headshots. Sure, the game can get bogged down during a busy campaign or with a ton of units on the field, however, considering that Im basically a lance in company on company combat at times, Im impressed that my iPad 2 can do it at all. Dont be deterred by people complaining about temporary freezes, yeah, its annoying, but the overall experience makes them forgettable. I wouldnt play this on anything but an iPad, you need the space to move and scroll, so dont expect a world class experience on your iPhone.
2) Mechbay: This is where the game truly shines, and is worth the price of the game alone. Where Mechcommander lacked customization of your mechs for the most part, this game grabs a customization level akin to Mechwarrior 4 (the pod/hard point system). Yeah, its not the critical slot system we all loved in Mechwarrior 3, but it still works great, and your customizations can make or break your mission success. The touchscreen handles the drop in weapon customization quite well, and as we all know, customizing your mechs is half the fun of playing the game. While the weapons have some minor canonization inaccuracies (pulse lasers doing so little damage), any seasoned mechwarrior will know how to read weapon stats, heat sink and ammo needs, and make their mechs bad as hell ;) Make no mistake, how you customize your mechs WILL directly effect how your mech performs in the game. If you keep losing a mission once the mech bay becomes available for you to use, you need to get in there and get your hands dirty. I also like how you can salvage mechs after certain missions, and buy or sell mechs to customize up to a company of mechs (thatd be 12 mechs for you non-sphereoids).
3) The video game universe is true to the cannon Battletech universe: Take your hats off Development Team, your game passed the bar that 99% of us Battletech fans care about. The attention to the Battletech universe shows. The Draconis Combine uses typical Kurita mechs, same with the Federated Commonwealth. The clan omnimechs were a given, sure, but the terminology was correct, and the storyline followed actual events in the universe. While the video sequences have a cartoon like quality to them, they are well done and important to flesh out storyline for those not as familiar to the Battletech Universe. Its this attention to detail that made this an actual Battletech game, and not some cheap knock off.
4) Platform: It is important to mention again, that this is an iOS game, not something that you play on your laptop or console. For an iOS game to be this detailed and functional on a tablet is quite remarkable. I love the fact that I could play this anywhere from the comfort of my iPad (this would be a great airplane game!) Its also awesome that I can close my smart cover, or hit the home button and go online while in a mission, and come back to it uninterrupted. Combine this with the fact that most Battletech gamers are a tough crowd to impress, and youve got to give it to the developers, they made a great game. Which leads me to my final point:
5) If youre a Battletech fan, you owe it to yourself to buy this game. Considering everything Ive mentioned before, this game is not only a great value, but its a great way to enjoy the Battletech universe for many more campaigns to come. This game is only 3 campaigns encompassing 21 missions, but clearly this game could continue on. With a universe as vast as the Battletech universe, the possibilities are endless! How about another 3 campaigns letting you play the defense of Luthien against the Clans? How about campaigns letting you play Comstarss valiant halt of the Clan invasion on Tukayyid, or their schism and ejection from Terra vs the Word Of Blake armies? How about playing a merc unit going through missions in the Chaos March, or playing as the clans as they fight each other in Trials on the homeworlds? Oh yeah, and how about MORE MECHS!?! Again, the possibilities are endless, BUT, only if you support this game out now by buying it and letting your friends know about it. This game deserves many sequels, or even in App campaigns or mech packs you can purchase. Dont believe me? Play the game. It is a refreshing take on your younger days pounding mechs into dust.
Good job to the Development team, and all the larger Battletech universe writers, license holders, and creators. After years of ups and downs, I found a refreshing "UP" that I can play on my iPad of all things :)
